MELBOURNE

fur is going to fly with a vengeance when top poundages are being taken in Australia.

Iran's Namjou and Mirzai can both Press 220 lbs., and have often 'placed' in the past, but I shall not be surprised if both are eliminated at Melbourne.

I suppose on 'form' Stogov must be considered the favorite. His stylish Pressing position and neat clean Foreand-Aft technique on the two fast lifts ... leave little room for disqualification once the bar is at arms-length. But queer things happen in competition at times and no-one dreamed

that Stogov would fail with 220 lbs. Press twice during the recent Helsinki meeting .. but that is exactly what happened before a final success came his way.

However, a few days later when demonstrating at a giant Moscow Spartakaid he atoned with a fresh Press Record of 236 lbs. . . . and may come through with a terrific 242 lb. lift during the impending Olympiad.

When something really 'big' is being decided Stogov lifts with great reliability... and I come to the conclusion that an improved Press style, and three successful attempts are a vital necessity if Vinci wants to finish on 'even' terms at the end of the first two lifts. It would be possible for the American to outstrip the Russian by 11 lbs. on the Snatch if all goes well--but after that, good 'Cleaning' ability will have to be accompanied by 'superior' Jerking

power before the final score is known.

In this respect the American could get out of the 'red' sensationally, if need arose, and at this stage of the contest a 'big surprise' could occur, as I have indicated in earlier articles.

World records are all very high in this division-but I shall be wrong in my estimate if they are not all exceeded before this Bantam battle is over.

These four-yearly Olympiads usually bring forth about three times as many lifters compared with the yearly world tournament, a fact that producers surprising elements-and must be allowed for. We only see a lifter like Del Rosario at the most infrequent intervals unfortunately. At Helsinki in 1952 he Pressed 236 lbs., and has since then succeeded with 240 lbs. His physique is colossally muscular and is always the cause of comment. He is a 'squatter' capable of handling big weights but his statistics show a rather high percentage of failures.

Young Berger and Vinci will constitute the spearhead of the American weightlifting team's attack in the two lightest divisions-and they will be carrying a 'torch' in more ways than

one.

Vinci has one international contest behind him... but Melbourne will be Isaac's first foreign athletic experience.

The 'high hopes' of Team Victory are vitally connected with the way these two youngsters handle themselves but their will-power and confidence are strongly-developed, and this should stand them in good stead when the big moments have to be mastered.

On current reports it looks as though Berger is sure of placing... but his

YORK SIMPLEX

SIMPLIFIED

opponent is an extraordinarily accomplished and formidable athlete, who, at 28-9 years of age is passing from triumph to triumph, and shows no sign of stopping at the 770-lb. mark.

Rafael Chimiskayan, the demon lifter, will, barring accidents, be Berger's chief adversary at Melbourne... but additionally, according to the final make-up of the Soviet Team . . . Ivan Udodov may also be present-to add to the complications.

Both these Russians totaled 770-lbs. at Vienna in 1954. . . and both have improved their individual lifts since

then.

Ivan's best lifts are 245-231-308 lbs. Rafael's best efforts are: 231-242-315

lbs.

Udodov is said to have 'Cleaned' 319 lbs. 'twice' in training. . . but he isn't too reliable on the Squat Snatch-or with his 'top' Jerks from the shoulder. Chimiskayan, on the other hand, seems to 'have everything' lifter

I could desire. .. including an intense demon-like driving force on great occasions that has to be seen to be appreciated. I don't think he will Press more than 231 lbs. at Melbourne, but he may very well Snatch 242 lbs. with his last lift and C&Jerk 314-319 lbs. He made wonderfully 'easy' lifts with 297 and 308 lbs. at Munich just missed 319 lbs. 'Clean' with his last attempt .. took it again, Cleaned it with a terrific struggle (during which he turned-round-in-a-quarter-circle during the 'recovery') . . . but he didn't try the Jerk.

What Users Say...

I am enclosing my check for $13.50 for the family size carton of Hi-Proteen and also $1.00 for the Hi-Proteen recipe book. Although I get very little exercise outside of yard work, the Hi-Proteen has firmed up my muscles and I have gotten rid of my flabby fat. Am quite pleased with results.

Donald S. Meech, Pittsford, New York I believe I have tried just about all the high protein foods on the market, and I want to tell you that I think yours is by far the best. First I like the taste very much, some high protein foods taste bad, next it likes me, digests well and gives me terrific pep, energy and endurance. I have gained an average of four pounds per box, twenty pounds in all. I hope this recommendation will encourage others to start with and stick with Hoffman's Hi-Proteen, it's the best.

Donald Luckabaugh, Hanover, Pa. Please send me another month's supply of chocolate flavored Hi-Proteen. Already I have gained 5 pounds on the first box.

Bob Coffman, Fairport, Ohio

I train with weights regularly and use HiProteen to build my body. I am only 13, but have already made wonderful gains in muscle size and strength.

George J. Blake, Jr., Longmeadow, Mass. I think Hoffman's Hi-Proteen is the best high protein food on the market. I have been using it for 6 months and got rid of a lot of burdensome fat, and feel better than I ever did in my life. Charles C. Shellenberger, Reading, Pa. Enclosed you will find a money order for 4 4-lb. packages of Plain Hi-Proteen. Several months ago we ordered Hoffman's Super HiProteen in tablet form. It certainly made a big difference in my family, we have a lot more ambition, and a broader outlook on life. Fred A. Deubach, Evans, Col.

I have been using Hoffman's Hi-Proteen for three months, and my lifting total has improved more than fifty pounds. No wonder I am a regular user of Hi-Proteen and believe it to be the best food on the market. I had tried several other high protein foods without favorable results.

Abram Hess, Chicago, Ill. The health of my whole family has certainly improved since we have been using Hoffman's Hi-Proteen. We feel we would not be without it. Mrs. D. Auby, Beaumont, Tex.

WHY

You Need

Hoffman's HI-PROTEEN...

THE NORMAL AMERICAN DIET contains precious little of the elements of the body needs, and that's why most people are tired, why they are often. painfully ill. Your health demands that you supply your body with plenty of complete protein (statistics point to the fact that 90% of people do not get enough protein to build and renew their bodies). A good diet should include 30% of protein for growth, maintenance and repair, for growth is impossible without ample complete protein, which contains all the 22 amino acids, with particular emphasis on large amounts of the essential ten. You need ample supplies of carbohydrates (natural sugars and starch) for energy. You also need a full quota of minerals and vitamins. Yet it is increasingly difficult to obtain these bodily needs from ordinary foods for most of today's foods are grown on depleted land lacking natural minerals. Foods are improperly handled, shipped and stored, they are processed and refined, which usually means complete impoverishment. You would need an enormous appetite, a super digestion and assimilation to obtain all your bodily needs from ordinary food. That's why Hoffman's Hi-Proteen was developed, a rich and concentrated natural food, which contains in usable form the elements your body needs.

Primarily Hi-Proteen in powder form is used as a milk drink. Three 8-ounce glasses of it taken hot or cold will provide the following nutriments: Protein 65 grams. Carbohydrates 70 grams, Calcium 1.5 grams, Phosphorus 1.42 grams, Iron 8 M G, Sodium. .39 grams, Potassium 2.18 grams, also adequate daily allowances of other essential minerals and vitamins. The proteins and minerals listed represent as much or more of the essential daily food elements as the body requires, as recommended by the Food and Nutritional Board of the National Research Council.

Hi-Proteen is made in powder form, in chocolate, vanilla, plain and carob flavors. It is sold in Mr. America boxes, 4 lbs. for $4.00 (west of the Mississippi, $4.50). Special Economy Family Cartons (Four 4-lb. boxes) $13.50. (west of the Mississippi, $15.50).
